Golfers tee off toward end of season
A pair of local scholastic girls golf teams are winding down their fall campaigns.
At La Jolla High, the Lady Vikings have recorded a mark of 5-10 for the season.
“With many players being brand-new to the game of golf, it has been exciting to see their improvement over the past few weeks,” La Jolla High head coach Chris Spence noted.
Freshmen Elyssa Kanter and Jasmine Graze posted career low scores at Riverwalk GC this past week, beating their previous best by six and five strokes, respectively.
“With only two seniors on the team, the season has been much about developing a base foundation of skills that the team can begin to build upon in the off-season,” Spence said. “We are hopeful to have three or four players qualify for the city championships and at least two moving on to CIFs.”
At the neighboring Bishop’s School, head coach Chuck Courtney and the Lady Knights have notched a record to date of 8-2. The only losses have been to 2006 state champ Poway and league rival Francis Parker. Bishop’s is 8-1 in conference play.
The team plays three matches this week and then will compete in the Coastal League tournament on Oct. 29-30 at Encinitas Ranch and Fairbanks Ranch CC.
“The three leading players are Denell Falk, Libby Hooton and up-and-coming freshman Alexa Bisbas,” Courtney noted. “All three girls have been consistent, with Falk shooting her career-best 39 against San Dieguito Academy recently. Anne Williams also had her best competitive round recently, a 42.”
