With all CIF activities canceled for the week after the wildfires, local scholastic teams got back into action last week.
On the girls volleyball scene, La Jolla High and head coach Dave Jones head into playoff action with a record of 21-7 (9-2 Western League). The Lady Vikings finished in second place in league play behind unbeaten Cathedral. University City finished in sixth place.
After a loss to Cathedral last Wednesday, La Jolla rebounded for a 24-26, 25-23, 33-31, 25-21 win over Scripps Ranch to clinch second place.
In the win over Scripps Ranch, La Jolla was led by Haley Cameron and Amanda Gordon (10 kills each) and Allyn Meyer (five). Karly Deer tallied 36 assists, while Gordon registered nine aces and Cameron added four blocks. Meghan Barry and Caitlin Parmer chipped in with 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
La Jolla has a bye in the first round of CIFs and will next play on Friday (7 p.m.) against the winner of the Santana/University City match.
Elsewhere, The Bishop’s School won a pair of matches last week, defeating La Jolla Country Day School (25-17, 25-17, 25-19) and Horizon (25-11, 25-11, 25-17).
In the win over LJCD, the Lady Knights were led by Carly Bollert with eight kills. Alex Pell was strong behind the service line, tallying four aces, and Savannah Smith provided a great spark off the bench.
The match-up with Horizon was Senior Night, as Bishop’s honored its four seniors: Brittany Allen, Laurel Casey, Pell and Jacqueline Rhodes.
The Lady Knights were led by Ina Kamenova with 12 kills and four aces and Kristen Casey with eight kills.
Bishop’s finished the regular season at 20-8 and will head into the playoffs as the number three seed in Division IV.
Finally, La Jolla Country Day School met up with Francis Parker following its loss to Bishop’s.
The Lady Torreys dropped that match, but head coach Peter Ogle is excited about the progress his squad has made.
“The Parker team has been one of the top teams in the county all season,” Ogle said. “The young Torreys are getting close to competing at that level.
