The local scholastic boys volleyball season netted some big wins for area teams.
At The Bishop’s School, the Knights under Head Coach Tod Mattox concluded the season in fine fashion, winning their last two league matches in the competitive Coastal Conference.
In the most exciting match of the season, the Knights spotted league co-champion San Dieguito Academy (SDA) two games before rebounding to sweep the next three. This win prevented SDA from claiming sole possession of the league championship.
The Knights were led by seniors Nick Lake (16 kills), Ivan Regalado (14 kills), Will Harris (17 digs) and Brian Laub (15 digs, five kills.)
In their final regular season match, the Knights defeated Santa Fe Christian 3-1, thereby sweeping the season series.
Standouts included junior outside hitter Wheeler Hadden (12 kills, four blocks) and setter Chandler Frost (33 assists.)
In CIF play, the Knights earned the fifth seed and traveled north to play fourth-seeded Tri-City Christian.
The Knights fell 3-0 to conclude their season with a 3-3 league record and 11-13 overall.
“Though the graduation of four seniors will hurt, there is some fine young talent playing volleyball at Bishop’s and the future of the program looks bright,” Mattox said.
At La Jolla High School, the Vikings under Head Coach Dave Jones won their opening CIF contest against Steele Canyon before falling to top-seeded Westview last week.
Junior setter Andrew Heap and sophomore outside hitter Matt Jones finished the season playing especially well. Senior Alex Tobias finally made it back from his season-long ankle sprain and has been selected to play in the Senior All-Star match on June 2.
In other action, Valley Center eliminated University City High in a Division III semifinal by scores of 25-18, 15-25, 26-24, 25-19.
