With the girls volleyball season heating up, several scholastic teams notched wins over the last week. The Bishop’s School headed into play this week with a mark of 15-3 for head coach Tod Mattox. Bishop’s had a busy week last week, beginning with a straight set loss to Cathedral on Tuesday. “Though we didn’t play particularly well, Thea Derrough led us with nine kills and Hannah Saber was the dig leader with nine,” Mattox noted. On Sept. 24, Bishop’s went to Poway and had a five-game battle before escaping with a narrow win.  Maddie Lord (nine aces) and Stephanie Yetter (five aces) were excellent from the service line, according to Mattox. Yetter had a great attacking match, hitting an impressive .625. Over the weekend, Bishop’s played in La Jolla High’s Beach City Invitational.  On Sept. 25, Bishop’s went 3-0, and won each match in straight sets.  “Maddie Lord was outstanding; her 24 kills and eight aces led us in both categories,” Mattox commented.    On Saturday, Bishop’s defeated Valley Center and El Toro (2-0 in each) before losing to Sunnyslope (Ariz.) in the semis (0-2). Bishop’s ended with a win (2-1) over Mead (Wash.) to earn third place.  Ina Kamenova tallied more than 100 assists on the day, and Derrough (32) and Kristen Casey (27) were the kill leaders, respectively. Casey was also the team’s best server and best serve receiver on the day. Kelly McPherson and A.J. Kiyoizumi provided some great defense for the Lady Knights, according to Mattox.  All-Tournament honors went to Casey and Derrough.  Elsewhere, La Jolla Country Day School enters play this week with a record of 11-0. In recent play, LJCD topped both Mt. Carmel and Santa Fe Christian, both in three straight games.  Lauren Birks and Mollie Rogers led the team in kills, with Chloe Mathis the assists leader. Jessie Altman and Kelsey Plum also did a great job setting, according to head coach Peter Ogle.  “Maya Hood and Gillian Howard were beasts in the middle and Cheyenne Giesecke starred as Libero,” Ogle commented. “Right sides Kendal Peterkin, Maggie Whitney and Melina Hood shut down the other teams.” At La Jolla High, the Lady Vikings went 3-3 last weekend in the Beach City Invitational. La Jolla’s Haley Cameron (middle blocker) was named to the All-Tournament Team. Heading into play this week, La Jolla is 8-6 and was to open Western League play against Cathedral as the Village News went to press yesterday.
