The La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School softball team returned from Spring Break and held the second annual Torrey Invitational Softball tournament last week.
The tournament was a 12-team tournament held at LJCD, The Bishop’s School and La Jolla High School.
The teams were from San Diego, Murrietta, Orange County and Los Angeles. Included in this group of teams were the defending San Diego CIF Division IV champions Imperial and the runner-up team Christian of El Cajon.
LJCD finished the tournament 2-1 with victories over Lincoln High School from Los Angeles and Julian.
Key performers for the Lady Torreys were Patricia Flathers with the game-winning RBI against Lincoln, and in the Julian game, Samantha Berenter was 3-for-3.
Her sister, Ally Berenter, had 13 strikeouts and her second homer of the weekend.
La Jolla High School did a nice job going 2-2 and had wins over Saddleback and Mountain Empire.
The Bishop’s School also had a record of 2-2 with wins over Marian Catholic and Julian. The tournament champion was Calvary Christian of Murrietta.
Bishop’s Head Coach Thomas Abeyta noted that the team had great pitching from freshman Natalie Camarda in last weekend’s tournament. She pitched a one-hitter against Marian Catholic and had 10 strikeouts. She also had a no-hitter against Julian before being taken out at the end of the third.
“The team is finally coming together after not having played but only two games before this past week,” Abeyta said. “They played as a team ” which was good to see ” against some very good pitching this weekend. You can see them getting their confidence like they had at the end of last year.” n
