Snedeker wins storm-delayed Farmers Open; wind damages Torrey Pines

Brandt Snedeker wound up winning the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course’s south course on Feb. 1 without hitting a shot.
Nashville native Snedeker, 35, closed with a 3-under 69 in nasty wind and rain on Jan. 31. There was some question whether his lead would hold when the final round was suspended because of the conditions.
Turns out the wind was just as bad – perhaps even worse considering the change in direction – and no one could top his score of 6-under 282.
K. J. Choi missed a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th that would have forced a playoff. He closed with a 76 and finished one shot behind. Jimmy Walker made bogey on four of the eight holes he played Monday and wound up three shots behind. Meanwhile, the course suffered significant damage in an overnight windstorm Jan. 31, according to multiple reports. A winter storm dumped rain and snow across San Diego County last weekend. City golf manager Mark Marney told a newspaper outlet that as many as 20 trees were felled by wind on the north and south courses. At least two prized Torrey pines were among the victims, he said. Winds gusted to at least 60 miles an hour along the coast, according to reports. The weather caused three stoppages of play on Jan. 31, and play was delayed Feb. 1 due to cleanup operations. A 75-foot-tall eucalyptus fell into the fairway at the par-4 15th, according to the newspaper. – ESPN
