Interested in collecting art but don’t know where to start?
The San Diego Visual Arts network has partnered with the Museum of the Living Artist to pull back the curtain and reveal trade secrets of the art-collecting industry to the general public in an effort to bring artists, collectors and educators together into a world dealing with more than just art appreciation.
“Our main goals for the event are really to make people feel more comfortable with collecting art,” art workshop lecturer Patricia Frischer said. “We found that people sometimes are very intimidated about the process of buying art. So we’re trying to give people more information, not necessarily on art appreciation but on the business of buying art.”
The next event in a series of lectures and seminars is a workshop that will take place on Wednesday, July 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. Titled “The Allure of the Marketplace,” this segment of the series will feature tips on researching art galleries, fairs, expos and related topics.
A workshop on Wednesday, Sept. 27, will include a panel discussion with art professionals, dealers and critics.
The workshops are $5 dollars for members and $10 for non-members.
On Wednesday, Oct. 18, the event will spotlight the San Diego Art Institute Southern California Awards. There will be an open panel discussion, which is free for members of SDAI and $5 for non-members.
Frischer said that the majority of art shows and opportunities for buying and collecting art have typically been available only to those who can afford expensive pieces. This series of events really opens up the world of art collecting to the “man on the street” with inexpensive shows, workshops and information available to anybody who is interested buying and collecting art, she said.
“People are asking: how they can find things they can afford? Or what they can do when they find art that they like that they can’t afford? How do they find room to display art?” Frischer said.
The San Diego Art Institute answers these questions in the SmArt Collector series.
SDAI is located in Balboa Park’s House of Charm, 1439 El Prado.
