Several local scholastic baseball teams racked up wins in action last week.
La Jolla High continued its winning ways last week as it swept through all three games to move its mark to 14-4 (2-0 in the Western League).
The Vikings opened up league play with an 11-2 victory over Clairemont. A three-run first inning gave the Vikings an early lead, followed by a six-run sixth stanza. Billy Bright went the distance to earn his third win of the season. Peter Sefton went 2-for-3 with four RBIs, and Jim Filter went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
La Jolla earned another win over Clairemont, 6-1, as the Vikings struck for four runs in the top of the first.
Doubles by Trent Jemmett and Zach Tonks got the offense going, while Wyatt Hoff took care of the rest, as he limited the Chieftans to one run over six innings of work to earn his fifth win of the season.
Rob Sprong went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs in the win.
The Vikings finished the week off with a Saturday night showdown with crosstown rival Bishop’s at Tony Gwynn Stadium under the lights, scoring a 6-5 victory.
Hoff went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Hoff also pitched the last 1 1/3 to earn his second save of the year. Casey Richmond picked up the win to move his mark to 2-1 on the season.
“This was a very fun night for us,” La Jolla High head coach Gary Frank noted. “It was a great experience for the kids to get to play under the lights in a college stadium, in front of a big crowd, and feel like big-leaguers for a night. We are very grateful to Al Gomez and The Bishop’s School for including us in this event.”
La Jolla is 10 games over .500 for the first time since it won the CIF championship in 2000.
Meantime, La Jolla Country Day School came into play this week for head coach John Edman with a record of 9-9.
In play last week, LJCD fell to San Dieguito, 8-3. Zack Kusnir had thrown six strong innings for the Torreys.
Last Saturday, LJCD went down and played a double-header with Montgomery. The Torreys dropped the opener by a score of 5-2, despite a good pitching performance from John Kennedy.
LJCD won the nightcap by a 2-0 score in a complete-game shutout thrown by Greg Wisenberg. Wisenberg struck out eight en route to the victory.
Junior catcher Mike McKenna went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI in the game and threw out three of four runners on the day.
