The La Jolla High Vikings baseball team rebounded from a poor week by winning both of their contests last week and improving their record to 7-3.
Senior Billy Bright earned his first win of the year on the mound by throwing six strong innings, allowing only two earned runs while striking out five and walking none to defeat the Serra Conquistadors, 7-3.
Bright was also the offensive star, as he went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Trent Jemmett and Zach Tonks had two hits apiece for the Vikings.
Jemmett and Bright were a two-man wrecking crew against Hoover High in a 13-4 win. Jemmett set the tone early for La Jolla when he hit a three-run home run. Bright added a grand-slam home run in the second and a three-run home run in the third.
Bright and Jemmett each had three hits and finished with seven and five RBIs, respectively.
Wyatt Hoff pitched four innings, allowing one unearned run, to pick up his third consecutive win on the mound.
“I was very proud of how our team bounced back this week,” La Jolla High head coach Gary Frank noted. “We returned to the solid style of play that got us off to such a good start this year. Our hitting and defense got back on track this week. Our pitching is very strong, and when we get good defense and timely hitting, we are a very tough team.”
The Bishop’s School raised its record to 5-5 with a pair of victories last week.
The Knights had the bats smoking as they plated 32 runs in two games. Bishop’s scored wins over Tri-City Christian, 16-6, and Escondido Charter, 16-1.
At La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School, the Torreys saw action last week in Arizona at the Cleats National Invitational Tournament.
LJCD opened with Arvada West (Colo.) and lost 6-3. Next up was a 10-9 loss to Salpointe (Ariz.).
The Torreys then met Chaparral (Ariz.) and dropped a 4-3 decision. Senior Zack Kusnir threw a two-hitter in the defeat. LJCD dropped its final game, an 11-10 decision to Wilson (Ore.).
LJCD junior Greg Wisenberg was named to the All-Tournament team, going 10-for-15 on the week with three home runs and 11 RBIs.
“It was a great opportunity for us to see that we can play with anybody, but losing one-run games got a little old,” LJCD head coach John Edman noted.
