Sluggers make pitch for tourney wins

Local scholastic baseball teams continue to turn in strong performances on the diamond in recent outings.
At The Bishop’s School, the Knights under head coach Al Gomez were sporting a 4-1 record.
Bishop’s scored a 13-3 win over High Tech with starting pitcher Chris Ludwig going 3-for-4 (four RBIs) and Tim Costello adding a grand slam. In an 8-6 win over Madison, starting pitcher Raj Dharmapal was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
“The guys are playing hard and we are doing a good job scoring runs, but we need to play better defense,” Gomez said. “Nick Cox, Tim Costello, Raj Dharmapal and Cade Sears are hitting the ball well.”
At La Jolla Country Day School, the Torreys under head coach John Edman saw action last week in the 3A Division of the Lions Tournament.
LJCD scored a 5-3 win over Castle Park as Ben Cohn (2-0) threw a complete game, giving up nine hits and only one walk. Freshman Sam Wisenberg hit a bases-loaded triple to clinch the victory.
In a 10-7 loss to University City, LJCD got a three-run homer from senior Mike McKenna.
LJCD posted a 13-6 win over San Dieguito, with sophomore Derek Hatfield providing three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored. McKenna went 3-for-5 with a double and a homer while driving in five runs.
In the consolation game, LJCD dropped a 4-2 decision in 14 innings to Otay Ranch. Greg Wisenberg, Cohn, Hatfield, JT Kelley and John Hansbrough combined for 12 scoreless innings on the mound.
“It was a very exciting game, and our young pitchers threw very well,” Edman noted.
At La Jolla High, the Vikings under head coach Gary Frank went 2-2 in Lions Tournament action last week to raise their record to 5-3-1.
La Jolla began the week with a 10-3 loss to Escondido, as three errors led to a seven-run second inning. Trent Jemmett went 3-for-4 with three doubles in the loss.
The Vikings bounced back for a 7-6 come-from-behind win over Hilltop High. Peter Sefton had a two-run homer, Jemmett added a two-run triple and Jimmy Filter had an RBI single.
In a 5-0 loss to Santana, Patrick Christensen pitched strong in defeat, allowing only two earned runs in five 1/3 innings.
La Jolla wrapped up play with a 17-9 consolation win over Madison.
Jemmett had a grand slam (six RBIs on the day), Bo Peterson delivered a two-run single, Sefton had two doubles and two RBIs and Wyatt Hoff added three hits and two RBIs.
“It has been a very up-and-down start for us this year,” Frank remarked. “We’ve done some things very well, but we’ve struggled with our consistency both offensive and defensively. Our guys played very hard this week and we had a couple of gutsy come-from-behind wins. Hopefully we can keep that momentum going when we start the City Conference Tournament (this week).”
