Nine La Jolla Shores residents are running for eight seats in the La Jolla Shores Association (LJSA) board of directors election in December. The board reviews building permits, enforces the Planned District Ordinance and monitors the shoreline. Residents, business and property owners or operators may vote; ballots are due Dec. 4. The LJSA also represents the community’s interests before the mayor-appointed La Jolla Shores Planned District Advisory Board, which reviews permit applications to provide recommendations to the city’s planning director. The LJSA meets the second Wednesday of the month at 7 p.m. in building T-29 at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. For more information email [email protected] or visit www.lajolla guide.com. The nine candidates have submitted the following statements: • Ed Furtek, incumbent Ed Furtek has 30 years experience in government and community relations, including service as chief of staff for U.S. Senator John Glenn (D-OH), and U.C. San Diego Vice Chancellor for Government and Community Relations. He has served as a board member on San Diego’s Naval Base Reuse Commission, UCSD CONNECT, San Diego East County Economic Development Corp and La Jolla Shores Planning Association. Furtek is a member of the LJSA Permit Review Committee. He and his wife, Kathleen Ritzman, have lived on Via Capri for 14 years and have two children. • Barry Graceman Since moving to La Jolla from Minnesota 10 years ago, Graceman has volunteered at SCORE, a counseling service to America’s small businesses, as a counselor and board member. Graceman is a board member for Junior Achievement; directs the marketing and publicity for AARP Tax-Aide for five counties in Southern California; is active in the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary; and is a member of La Jolla Community Planning Association. Before moving to La Jolla, Graceman and his wife, Susan, lived in Minneapolis where Graceman ran his own business, was very active in business associations and served on many nonprofit boards. • Max Ladjevardi Ladjevardi has lived in La Jolla Shores for 10 years with his wife and two children, who are students at Torrey Pines Elementary. Ladjevardi said he’s worked “passionately” to restore and maintain one of La Jolla’s landmark residences, the Taj Mahal, with its domed ceilings. “I’m interested in serving on the LJSA board to contribute back to our beautiful community,” Ladjevardi said. Ladjevardi has a 45-year background in business and an MBA from Harvard. • Weston Anson “As a 25-year resident of the Shores (El Paseo Grande), I am very interested in helping the association, either as a board member or in other ways,” Anson said in his statement. • Pamela Boynton “As a resident of La Jolla Shores for 36 years, I have observed the many contributions that the LJ Shores Association has made to our community,” Boynton said in a statement. “I had the opportunity to serve on the board in the late ’70s and am pleased to be involved again with keeping our beaches attractive, helping to preserve the charm of the neighborhoods and Avenida de la Playa.” • Debra Rappaport Rosen “I am a mother of four and a professional fund-raiser with a passion for community. My husband, six-month-old baby and I moved to La Jolla in 2003. We quickly fell in love with this enchanting place and, six years and three children later, we’re here to stay. We were amazed at how the community came together to build a new playground from scratch at Kellogg Park, and I hope to harness that spirit toward other projects that can benefit our entire community.” • Pat Nissan, incumbent “For the past 17 years, I have lived in and raised my two children in the La Jolla Shores area. I have served several terms on my homeowners association [board] and I currently am the recording secretary for the LJSA board. As a board member, my intention has and continues to be a voice for our local residents, for the purpose of the preserving of the character and quality of life of La Jolla Shores.” • David Laney, incumbent “I have lived in La Jolla for 30 years,” Laney said. “My wife and I have 6-year-old twins that attend Torrey Pines Elementary. I am enthusiastic about constructively facing the important La Jolla Shores issues; preserving the character of La Jolla Shores, protecting homeowner’s rights against commercial interests, public beach access, beach safety and having the voice of La Jolla Shores heard in San Diego city government.” • Tim Lucas, incumbent “As a longtime resident of La Jolla Shores, I am currently serving on the LJSA board, and as one of its representatives to the LJS Permit Review Committee. I am also a trustee on the La Jolla Community Planning Association. I am concerned with the over-development and building of residences that are out of proportion with their neighborhoods. Too many projects are being built on small lots with no setbacks due to insufficient protections in our Planned District Ordinance (PDO). I am working with the community on getting the PDO updated. My goal is to help preserve and enhance our community.”
