Sergio Mendes to play LJMS’ annual SummerFest

The La Jolla Music Society’s annual SummerFest Gala takes place on Aug. 17 at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center. This year’s event is themed “Carnival at the Conrad” with Brazilian inspired food and drink topped by an appearance from iconic jazz and bossa nova pianist, Sergio Mendes. He has recorded dozens of albums in his six decades-long career, but it’s his string of singles in the 1960s that continue to resonate, with his versions of tunes such as “The Look Of Love,” “Fool on the Hill,” and especially “Mas Que Nada,” all now considered standards and still sounding great. Funds raised at this year’s SummerFest Gala will benefit the La Jolla Music Society’s Education and Children’s Programming.

Summerfest Gala with Sergio Mendes: Saturday Aug.17 at the Conrad Prebys Performing Arts Center, 7600 Fay Ave. 8 p.m. All ages. ljms.org.
