A section of Tourmaline Surfing Park is back open Saturday after it was closed by lifeguards when a portion of a cliff gave way. An estimated two tons of dirt and rocks sloughed off the oceanfront cliff in the 400 block of Sea Ridge Drive in La Jolla around 1:30 p.m. Friday, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. The property broker told FOX 5 that the homeowner is asking for an emergency permit from the City of San Diego and the Coastal Commission to fix the problem. “The whole thing was a giant mistake. An employee of the homeowner turned on a valve to fill up the pool but forgot to turn it off,” said Barry Tashakorian, the home broker. By Saturday, the dropping had stopped – “but not before the damage was done,” said neighbor and oceanographer Dr. Tim Barnett. “Maybe it’s a pool today, but with El Nino, we get a lot of rain and it could make this cliff go all at once,” Barnett said. On Friday, authorities cordoned off a roughly 50-by-50-foot radius of beach around the site of the earth slide and called in a city geologist to survey the area for any lingering hazards, according to Capt. Joe Amador of San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. The collapse caused no apparent dangers to homes at the top of the bluff and resulted in no evacuations, Amador said. Despite reports that it is purely a rental property, the broker said the homeowner was there at the time and uses a vacation rental company when he’s traveling. — Fox 5
