Scott Peters, District 1 City Councilman and council president, announced Monday, Feb. 18 that he will enter the race for city attorney.
In a statement following his announcement, Peters said he would restore “competence, integrity and ethics” to the office that Michael Aguirre now holds. Peters said that under Aguirre, there has been an “exodus of 100 or more talented lawyers.”
Peters has represented City Council District 1 for almost eight years and said he is the person best positioned to defeat Aguirre because his campaign “will receive support from across the city and the political spectrum.”
Peters did address the pension system at his kick-off, saying, “For the past five years, we’ve put the pension system back on its feet. We’ve fixed reporting and budgeting problems dating back to the 1980s,” Peters said. “We stopped pension under-funding. Our employees made concessions in labor negotiations that resulted in a $350 million decrease in the pension deficit. As a result of this work, our city actuary has declared the pension system financially sound.”
Peters lives in La Jolla with his wife, son and daughter. He is running against incumbent City Attorney Michael Aguirre, Jan Goldsmith, Dan Coffey, Amy Lupine, Lee Burdick and District 5 City Councilman Brian Maienschein, who is also termed out after this year.
