Pointer track and field athletes wrapped up a rare season with several school records, a pair of CIF champions, and some qualifiers for the state finals held last weekend at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.
Leading the record-breakers was senior Sophie Compton, a cross country star and long-distance runner who broke two all-time Pointer records.
In the mile run, Compton clocked a 5:08.36 to break the previous record of 5:10.82 set by Jordyn Duby in 2019. Then, in the 3200M event, Compton’s time of 10:52.71 was far below the previous record of 11:14.89 set by Meghan Breadmore in 2011. Compton won a league title in the 1600M and finished fourth in the CIF 3200M finals.
Also in track, junior distance runner Manny Correia set a 1000M record with a time of 4:14.08, erasing Ricky Sweet’s time of 4:17.02 set in 2013. Correia was also a Western League champion and a member of the 4X800 relay team and finished second in the league 1600M run. He won the CIF 1600M and was third in the 800M.
In infield events, senior Mikaela Miles bettered the triple jump record with a combined leap of 38 feet 2.5 inches to replace Courtney Justus’ measure of 37 feet 10.25 inches set in 2015. She won eight of 11 meets in this category. She also placed second in the league long jump with a personal best of 16 feet 11 inches and was part of the 4X100 relay team. She was the only Pointer to place in the finals at Clovis, coming in ninth place in the state.
Other Pointers also had outstanding seasons.

Senior Christopher Simsic won the league 400M race in a personal best time of 50.31 and was part of the league champion 4X400 relay team along with Correia, Aaron Lee, and Gustavo Osorio.
Senior Cameron Joyce was the top discus thrower at PLHS with a personal best of 119 ft. 1.5 in. He also won two meets tossing a 12-pound shot put 40 feet 3 inches best.

His brother, senior Nathan, finished second at the CIF finals with a triple jump of 42 feet 7.25 inches Sophomore Donovan Wood triple jumped 41 feet 3.25 inches for fifth place at the CIF finals.

POINTERS ASSOCIATION
The Pointer Association is having an end-of-year meet and greet on June 6 at The Loma Club, 2960 Truxton Road. PLHS parents, students, alumni, and faculty are invited to join current board members, some of whom are “graduating,” to learn of the activities and opportunities of this umbrella organization that oversees all booster groups at the school.
The nonprofit is the sole adult fundraising group for Point Loma High School and is ready, after the COVID disruption, to resume activities to enhance education and promote the activities of students, alumni and staff. Some board positions will be opening for next year. The event begins at 6 p.m. For further information, go to [email protected].
