SAN DIEGO — Amidst the current budget crisis, students who use the bus as a means of transportation to and from school will be expected to pay a $340 annual fee for the service, according to a new Fee for Transportation policy listed on the San Diego Unified School District’s (SDUSD) Web site. If the same household has a second student who rides the bus, the fee for the second child will be discounted to $170. There is no additional cost for a third student within the same household. The only exceptions will be for Special Education Students, those qualifying for free and reduced lunches and students whose household income meets the eligibility scale, which is based upon the number of people living in the household. The public may download the districts Fee for Transportation Application and payment guidelines from the SDUSD Web site at www.sandi.net. Payments can be made monthly, per semester or annually. The district did provide bus transportation to all students today and will continue to do so through Sept. 17, which is the due date for the fees. — DEBBIE HATCH
