‘Waste No Water’ artists honored
City of San Diego Mayor Bob Filner, Council President Todd Gloria, Council President Pro Tem Sherri Lightner and the entire San Diego City Council honored the winners of the 13th annual Children’s Water Conservation Poster Contest at a City Council ceremony on May 14. The ceremony celebrated the 19 children whose remarkable artwork helps spread the vital message “Waste No Water,” including Muirlands Middle schooler Athena Tsai, who won first place in the sixth-grade category.

Hearty welcome for LJHS students-to-be
Staff and students at La Jolla High School (LJHS) welcomed incoming students and families of the class of 2017 with an evening open house with entertainment from the LJHS band and Madrigals on May 8. Presentations from principal Dana Shelburne, athletic teams and student clubs informed incoming freshmen students and parents about the high achieving academics and outstanding extracurricular activities the high school has to offer.

Preuss students honored with scholarship
Samuel Carrillo and Perla Rubi from The Preuss School UCSD are two of 10 high school students to receive the Ronald McDonald House Charities/Hispanic American Commitment to Education Scholarship in recognition of their academic performance and dedication to the community. Carrillo and Rubi will receive $2,500 toward college expenses in the 2013-14 school year. 
“Out of more than 200 applicants this year, 10 students stood out for their remarkable resilience, passion and drive,” said Christian Sandoval, a San Diego McDonald’s owner-operator and chair of the scholarship committee. “We are honored to help these students take the next step in their academic studies to reach their career goals.”
summer learning opportunities in uc — Teachers from the University Towne Center Learning Center invite parents and students to visit the center to learn more about the summer options available for students in grades 7-12. Over the past 16 years, the learning center has offered students in the University City community an educational choice through its university-based instruction model, where students work independently and attend classes, labs or tutorials two to five days each week. Curie Elementary teacher is Educator of the Year
Lisa Downard, third-grade teacher at Curie Elementary School in University City, has been named 2013 Educator of the Year by the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary (LJGT) Club. Now in its 15th year, the LJGT Rotary’s Educator of the Year program honors four local teachers and/or counselors in recognition of their extraordinary contribution to students’ personal and academic growth.
This year’s three finalists are Daniel Rupert, physics and robotics instructor at The Preuss School at UCSD; Wendy Martin, third-grade teacher at Doyle Elementary School; and Jenny Dohoney, history teacher at Standley Middle School. The winner receives a $1,000 cash award; each finalist receives a $300 cash award; and all winners and finalists receive a personal plaque and perpetual plaque for their schools. La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club has awarded over $28,000 to winners and finalists since the inception of the Educator of the Year Award program.
