This year’s “Best at the Beach Fish Taco” competition will take place at the Pacific BeachFest on Saturday, Oct. 7. The Sandbar Sports Grill has won for the past five years. Sandbar Sports Grill is located in Mission Beach on Ventura Place, right next to Belmont Park. Tacos are the main dish on their menu and they have a huge tequila and rum slection. Their slogan is “Tacos, tequila, tiki.” Tiki, because their drinks are inspired by tiki culture and the islands. “It is nothing like a traditional fish taco,” said assistant general manager Alika Herrera. Their fish taco is made with grilled mahi mahi, a cotija-crushed flour tortilla with cotija cheese melted on it, chipotle aioli, beer-brined escabeche slaw, lime crema, spicy guacamole, tobacco onions and topped with fried cilantro. “It is an explosion of flavor. There are a lot of things going on, so when you take a bite you get a little of everything. You get a little spicy and you get a little freshness. Everything is just in balance,” said Herrera. Sandbar Sports Grill opened in 2001 and is owned by the Verant Group, which also owns Tavern at the Beach, Barleymash and many other restaurants in San Diego.
