San Diego Wave Fútbol Club looks to continue its impressive rookie season in the National Women’s Soccer League on Sunday, Aug. 7 at Torero Stadium as they take on the Kansas City Current.

Kansas City has been impressive over several weeks going undefeated over its last eight matches including victories against OL Reign, Gotham FC, Houston Dash, Racing Louisville, and the defending champion Washington Spirit along with a 2-2 draw versus San Diego Wave on June 4.

“Yeah, it was a really tough game. I thought they were exceptional that night, so we know that we’re going to be in for a real test,” said San Diego head coach Casey Stoney. “We’re at home, so the emphasis is on us to attack and take our game to them, which we certainly will do.”

The Wave is coming off a road win against Chicago Red Stars thanks largely to a first-half goal from 17-year-old sensation Jaedyn Shaw and a penalty kick save in the 82-minute by goalkeeper Kailen Sheridan.

Kansas City is coming off a dramatic 2-2 home tie versus Orlando Pride on July 31 thanks to a late goal from forward Cece Kizer who was not available in the first meeting between San Diego and Kansas City.

The match on Sunday kicks off at 2 p.m. and will be the first of a three-game homestead for San Diego before they travel to face the Portland Thorns on Aug. 27. San Diego and Portland are currently the top two teams in the NWSL standings.
