After an impressive 4-2 win over Angel City FC in its previous match on April 2 at Torero Stadium, San Diego Wave Fútbol Club will now travel to Lumen Field in Seattle to face OL Reign on Thursday, April 14 looking for back to back wins.
This will be the first time the two teams face each other in the NWSL Challenge Cup with San Diego Wave currently trailing the team led by USWNT legend Megan Rapinoe and Rose Lavelle by three points in the group B standings, which makes this game even more significant.
San Diego’s recent improvement on the attack will be put to the test against a team that has only given up two goals so far in the tournament, which is tied for best defense with the Portland Thorns who they play on Sunday.
“It’s a super competitive league end to end,” San Diego Wave head coach Casey Stoney said in a recent interview with Sky Sports. “The players I work with are incredible and I think we’re building something really special here.”
A victory for San Diego Wave would put all three teams in a tie with seven points in the group after four matches with Angel City trailing at the bottom, while a loss would place their knock-off round aspirations in jeopardy.
It is not known if Rapinoe will play since she is still recovering from injury, but Lavelle is expected to be on the pitch.
San Diego will return home on April 23 for a rematch with OL Reign where they hope to have a raucous crowd pushing them on as was the case in their previous home match versus LA.
