San Diego Wave FC announced on March 22 that the club has signed midfielder Giovanna DeMarco ahead of the season. DeMarco signed a one-year deal with an option through the 2024 season.
“Giovanna is a talented young player who will add depth to our roster following her collegiate career at Wake Forest. We were excited to select her in the NWSL Draft and watched her progress with the team during preseason, seeing first-hand her qualities and mindset,” said Casey Stoney, San Diego Wave head coach.
DeMarco, 23, spent the last five seasons at Wake Forest University. A native from Gwynedd Valley, Pa., DeMarco appeared in 74 games (69 starts), tallying 11 goals and seven assists in her collegiate career. The midfielder was selected to the All-ACC Academic Team (2018, 2019, and 2021) and ACC All-Freshman Team (2018).
“I am so excited to have signed my first professional contract with the San Diego Wave. This is a dream come true, and I can’t wait to play in front of the best fans in the league at Snapdragon Stadium,” DeMarco said.
San Diego will open its 2023 campaign on Saturday, March 25, at Snapdragon Stadium at 7 p.m. The match against the Chicago Red Stars kicks off the Wave’s first full season at the new Snapdragon Stadium. Tickets to attend the Wave’s 2023 home debut are available by clicking here.
