San Diego Wave will travel to Children’s Mercy Park to take on the Kansas City Current on Sunday, May 14, in hopes of getting back in the win column after having lost three of its last four regular season matches, which includes back-to-back defeats to the Orlando Pride and Washington Spirit.

The Wave currently sits in fifth place with nine points while Kansas City sits in ninth place with six points as both teams have played six games so far this regular season. The Current made it to the 2022 NWSL championship match falling to the Portland Thorns 2-0 and coming off a 3-2 defeat on the road to Angel City FC.

“Obviously, we’re playing a very good side in Kansas,” said San Diego head coach Casey Stoney. “It’s a difficult trip for us, but we feel like we have a good week’s preparation, and we’re very prepared to go and get a result.”

San Diego has been without the services of key players the last couple of games including midfielder Taylor Kornieck who has been dealing with an abdominal injury and last saw action on April 19 in the Challenge Cup opening round 1-0 victory over the Portland Thorns.

The Wave has also been without the services of midfielder Emily van Egmond for the last two matches and recently saw the return of forward Alex Morgan who missed the game versus Orlando on April 29 but returned for the team’s most recent match against Washington scoring a goal in the 90th minute.

“I think we’re really excited about this game. We’re away again, so we’re gonna need a lot of energy going with us to Kansas City,” said forward Amirah Ali. “Our last two games weren’t the result that we wanted, but we’re definitely looking forward to this next game.”

San Diego has one more match in its three-game road trip on May 20 against the Houston Dash at Shell Energy Stadium before returning home to take on the Portland Thorns at Snapdragon Stadium on May 26.
