The dream matchup that everyone was waiting for came to be as the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup selection committee announced that San Diego Loyal will be facing off against LA Galaxy, the team that Landon Donovan won four MLS Cup titles with as a player, on April 19.
San Diego Loyal earned their spot after a dramatic 2-1 win over Albion San Diego in the team’s second-round match on April 6.
As for LA Galaxy, the team entered automatically into third-round competition along with LAFC and several other MLS teams based on changes made to the competition that previously had MLS teams enter in the fourth round.
The game will be played at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson where LA Galaxy plays their home games – the time and date will be provided in the coming days but will be sometime between April 19 and 21.
Besides winning four championships with LA Galaxy during his 11 seasons with the team, Donovan also won the U.S. Open Cup in 2005.
“For me personally, with my history, I was excited for the opportunity for our guys to go play one of the best teams in MLS, my former team,” said San Diego Loyal head coach Donovan.
San Diego Loyal has won four of its first five regular-season matches and currently sits atop the USL Championship standings alongside Colorado Switchbacks both with 12 points. LA Galaxy sits in third place in the MLS Western Conference standings winning three of its first five games and is led by Javier Chicharito Hernández who is currently tied for second in the league in goals.
“So, it should be a great night. It’s a great opportunity. We’ve never had a chance to play an MLS team in a real game and now we have that opportunity,” Donovan added. “Our guys will be really excited and ready for it.”
