It’s time to get revved up for the 2007 San Diego International Auto Show taking place at the San Diego Convention Center, 111 West Harbor Drive.
The show kicked into high gear Wednesday, Dec. 27, and will offer the latest in automobile technology and luxury through Sunday, Dec. 31, with more than 400 new vehicle models from 35 domestic and foreign manufacturers on display.
At this year’s show, the cars really are the stars, said San Diego International Auto Show Media Director Amy Foley.
The event features brand new 2007 models, SUV’s, hybrids and concept cars. The hands-on, no-pressure environment is the perfect forum for car fanatics to indulge their love affair.
Themed events sponsored by well-known automakers “” including Cadillac, Ford, Lamborghini and Hummer “” will highlight the newest vehicle features. The Toyota off-road on-site Adventure will offer adrenaline junkies the opportunity to test drive the FJ Cruiser, Tacoma and Tundra on an off-road course made of dirt and gravel full and filled with obstacles such as logs, sand pits and a wood bridge.
Those who prefer to keep their feet planted on solid ground can check out the Ultimate Ridez Expo, which features the hottest trends in custom and after-market accessories. The expo has everything from tricked-out cars and mini-trucks to fancy exotics and upscale celebrity rides.
Attendees with a need for speed can check out the Hyundai Street Drive, located outside the main entrance and featuring professional drivers and product specialists who can answer questions and provide demonstrations.
After all the excitement there will be a chance to relax at the Lifestyles Center. The Jolla Spa MD “Spa Lounge” will have chair massages and other amenities, while the Scripps Healthcare Pit Stop offers body tune-ups, free gifts and healthcare screenings for those seeking a full mind-body-car connection.
“Here, the motto is: If everyone took care of their bodies as they did their cars, we would all be in better shape. So it’s definitely something you won’t see at other auto shows,” Foley said.
However, the San Diego International Auto Show isn’t just for adults. Kid’s Day on Dec. 31 is free for children 12 and under with a paid adult admission. Family-friendly activities include appearances by “Lightning McQueen” and “Luigi” from the Disney-Pixar movie “Cars.”
This year’s auto show is presented solely by New Car Dealers Association, a change from previous years when it was a collaborative event.
“It really is a totally whole new event and big show at the convention center. I think people will notice the bar’s been raised,” Foley said.
Admission prices are $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and military with ID. Children under 6 are in free; ages 7 to 12 are $6, except for Kid’s Day when admission is free with the purchase of an adult ticket.
