For the past 10 years, the San Carlos Community Garden (SCCG) has brought the community together during the annual Fall Festival event.

This year, the free festivity will continue from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 with the festival’s theme: ‘Growing Community and Sharing our Bounty.’ The event is located at 6460 Boulder Lake Ave., San Diego.

In an effort to address food insecurity, the SCCG asks that those interested in attending bring a non-perishable item as an entry ticket to the festival. The collected items will be donated to the Good Shepherd Food Distribution program in El Cajon to help families in need.

Live music, arts and crafts, activities for kids, educational resources and demonstrations on native plant gardening, water conservation techniques, seasonal gardening and much more will be offered at the festival.

By hosting fun activities and educational booths that promote the SCCG’s mission: ‘Growing Community,’ we hope to present memorable events for all ages within the community.

Attendees are encouraged to enjoy the garden’s space and engage with the community and inquire about volunteering, plot leasing and events.

Community partners such as Aloha Solar, Heather M. Craig Realty, Cox Communications, San Diego Public Library, Brew Coffee, Food2Soil, Core Power Yoga, Keils, Dr. Bronner’s and more will provide free product demonstrations and giveaways throughout the event.

Don’t miss our monthly events

The community is invited to come and enjoy the Garden by taking part in our monthly events held during open hours on Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m.

In partnership with the San Diego Public Library San Carlos Branch, Alphabet soup, an interactive story-time appropriate for children 10 and under with Ms. Erin, is held in the garden on the second Saturday of every month from 10 to 10:30 a.m.

SCCC’s upcoming workshops (advanced registration required, $10 per person):

Oct. 15: Fall & Winter Container Gardening: Learn how to grow your favorite herbs and veggies in a small space from gardening extraordinaire, Chuck McClung, a lifelong plant enthusiast, garden designer, columnist and author of “How Orchids Rebloom.” All participants are asked to bring their own 12” pot; otherwise reusable plastic pots will be provided.

Nov. 19: Landscaping with Succulents, presented by Sue Thomas from the San Diego Cactus & Succulent Society: Showcasing these unique plants, you will learn how succulents can be used for landscaping and visual pleasure.

Yoga in the Garden with CorePower yoga (Free event): Sundays, 4 to 5 p.m., beginning Oct. 16.

Produce swaps are held every fourth Saturday of the month 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. to swap fruit, vegetable, herbs, flowers and more with community members.

The San Carlos Community Garden is a 501c3 non-profit.
