Rock 4 Autism fundraiser set for Oct. 14

On Oct. 14 Brick by Brick will be the site of Rock 4 Autism, a fundraiser for Carly’s Cause, an organization raising money for an arts and music program to benefit special needs children. The night features four bands, including cover band, Get Groovin’, Iron Maiden tribute Up The Irons, Black Sabbath tribute Lords of Sabbath and headliner Fred Barchetta with Points North performing a tribute to Rush. Classic rock fans will love every second of this show, but it’s also is a great opportunity to do a good deed while getting a great night of music in return. Rock 4 Autism: Friday, Oct. 14, at Brick by Brick, 1130 Buenos Ave. 7 p.m. 21 and up. $15. www.brickbybrick.com. Music aficionados looking for a great way to kick off an evening need look no further than Firefly at the Dana. A great place to get a drink or meal before you head out for your weekend activities, the venue has in recent months really amped up their talent schedule with a many of the area’s top performers turning in early evening sets. On Oct. 8 Firefly will host a performance from guitarist David Shyde. Shyde’s music offers up something for just about everybody, with a Broadway worthy voice and bluesy takes ranging from evergreens like “Georgia On My Mind,” to Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself.” David Shyde: Saturday, Oct. 8 at Firefly, 1710 West Mission Bay Drive. 7 p.m. 21 and up. No cover. www.thedana.com/dining. One of the area’s best kept secrets is the monthly free music concert series at the Pacific Beach Library. The intimate setting is perfect for listening, with a full program of jazz, pop and world music throughout the year. On Oct. 12, one of the area’s most beloved performers, legendary pianist Sue Palmer will take over the libraries grand piano with a set of classic boogie-woogie and blues tunes. Backed by drummer Sharon Shufelt on drums and Pete Harrison on bass, Palmer is a virtuoso dynamo on the keys – if you haven’t caught one of her sets yet, you are missing out on one of san Diego’s musical treasures. Sue Palmer: Wednesday, Oct.12 at Pacific Beach Library, 4275 Cass St. 7 p.m. All ages. No cover. www.pblibraryfriends.org. With the release of the new film, “Eight Days A Week,” the Beatles are once again in the headlines and on the charts. Local fans will have a chance to help celebrate rhythm guitarist John Lennon’s birthday with a special concert from the Benedetti Trio at Dizzy’s on Oct. 15. Featuring guitarist Fred Benedetti and his daughters, Regina and Julia, the concert will take in music from throughout Lennon’s career, for a well rounded listen through his musical life. Benedetti has recorded numerous albums of Beatles music, but it’s live where the magic really is and audiences can thrill to those fleet fingers at work. The Benedetti Trio: Saturday, Oct. 15, at Dizzy’s, 4275 Mission Bay Drive. 8 p.m. $15. www.dizzysjazz.com. The 710 Beach Club hosts a free cover band double bill, featuring Dirty Taxi and Copy Cat Killers. If it’s a musical jukebox of hits you are looking for, this is the show for you, with all bases covered. Copy Cat Killers will open up with a set of hard rock from the likes of Ac/DC and Led Zeppelin, before handing things over to Dirty Taxi for more modern tunes from artists such as Weezer and Red Hot Chili Peppers. While surprises will be few, both bands turn out worthy versions of classic tunes, just what you need to keep the dance floor full. Dirty Taxi: Saturday, Oct. 15, at the 710 Beach Club, 710 Garnet Ave. 9 p.m. 21 and up. No cover. www.710bc.com. Blues fans and sports fans have an opportunity to come together this month on Oct. 17 and 24, at Humphrey’s Backstage Live, with a Monday night blues jam hosted by Chargers offensive lineman Joe Barksdale. The evening will open with a short set from Barksdale before opening up the stage to anyone who would like to join in. Barksdale is a solid guitarist, with a slew of classics in his repertoire, such as “Hey Joe,” well worth hearing, but even nicer, he will be donating proceeds from these shows to the Fender Music Foundation, a non-profit organization that grants musical instruments and equipment to ongoing music education programs. Joe Barksdale: Oct. 17 and 24, at Humphrey’s Backstage Live, 2241 Shelter Island Drive. 8 p.m. $10. www.humphreysbackstagelive.com.
