Restaurants at Cove have close call when land slides

Pasquale Angelotti, owner of Pasquale on Prospect, said he came to his Italian restaurant last Friday morning at about 8 a.m. to see his cleaning guy interviewing with news people. That’s when Angelotti said he learned that a slice of land “” behind the building he shares with George’s at the Cove “” turned to mud hours before and began sliding toward his neighbors below.0
Alejandro Flores of Brockton Villa’s wait staff said he walked into work Friday morning, across the street from La Jolla Cove, to see a mudslide.
“When I came in, it was like that already,” Flores said, adding the slide was caused by water.
Sgt. Kerry Tom of the San Diego Police Department said the slide was reported at about 1:30 a.m., and was about 15 feet across.
“The 1200 block of Prospect Street was closed while city engineers inspected the area,” Tom said.
Angelotti said the leak, behind his business, was due to vagrants.
“A homeless guy left the water running,” Angelotti said.
But Tom said that city engineers inspected the area, ruling out homeless people as the cause.
“They determined it was from some irrigation in the landscaping; in the watering system,” Tom said.
Although the landslide endangered Coast Boulevard businesses below Prospect Street, George’s at the Cove and other restaurants opened at their scheduled hours.
“The landslide’s had virtually no effect on us except that the maintenance supervisor got a call from the police early in the morning,” said George Hauer, owner of George’s at the Cove.
