Capt. Mark Cedrun, who led the San Diego-based USS Boxer, the ship assigned to the counter-piracy task force in the Gulf of Aden that rescued Capt. Richard Phillips, will be the guest speaker at the Oct. 2 La Jolla Republican Women Club meeting at La Jolla Country Club, 7301 High Ave.
In 2009, four Somali pirates stormed the cargo ship Maersk Alabama in the Indian Ocean. Richard Phillips was taken hostage in a small red lifeboat.
The Boxer, two other U.S. Navy ships and Navy SEAL Team 6 surrounded the lifeboat. The SEALs shot and killed three pirates and rescued Phillips.
The film “Captain Phillips,” starring Tom Hanks, was based on the incident.
The political group meets the second Thursday of each month at 10:30 a.m. at the country club.
