PACIFIC BEACH OPENS WAR ON BILLBOARDS, read the headline in the July 12, 1919 issue of the San Diego Union. The demise of the train to La Jolla a year earlier must really have increased the traffic on Highway 1, which ran south on Cass Street and east on Garnet Avenue.
