Set to premier at the recently redeveloped NTC Promenade at Liberty Station, the “Art-To-Wear Fall Show and Sale” will feature 36 artists, including 10 guild members and will offer original pieces like jewelry, garments, and accessories for sale.
Sponsored by the San Diego Artwear Guild, the event takes place Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Corky McMillin Events Center.
San Diego Artwear Guild President JoAnn Bickley, a member for more than 20 years, will be on hand to show a few of her handmade creations, including purses and wall hangings made from retro and recycled materials.
“There are so many gifted people “¦ and this is really unique,” she said. “The artist might have another one like it or can make another piece, but usually they’re very limited and one-of-a-kind. If you don’t get it now, you’re not going to get it.”
Other artists will include Mary Jane Bailey with fused dichroic glass jewelry and sun catchers, Ruth Barnett with hand-forged sterling wire link jewelry and Joan Nickerson with original seed beadwork jewelry designs.
Among the more unusual works on display at the show will be scarves and hats weaved from dog hair.
“I would never know that it was animal hair until [the artist] told us that’s what it was because it looks just like fuzzy yarn,” Bickley explained.
Open to a variety of budgets, Bickley said pricing will range anywhere from $20 to $300.
“There’s a nice variety of things and the location’s great,” she explained. “It’s nice when you come and see what the redevelopment at the old Naval training station has been like.”
The San Diego Artwear Guild formed in 1981 to represent local handweavers but has since broadened its scope to include contemporary dyed, painted, pieced and quilted fabric arts clothing and wearable accessories.
The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 21. Admission and parking are free.
Fitting rooms will be available and checks, cash and credit cards will be accepted. For more information, call Bickley at (619) 297-3030.
