EX-POINT LOMAN FACES CHARGES OF MURDERING WIFE
A former Point Loma man remains in jail on $5 million bail on a murder charge involving the death of his wife in 2007. The woman’s remains were found in a desert in 2007.
Anthony Edward Simoneau, 46, was extradited from Hawaii and pleaded not guilty Sept. 29 to a charge that he murdered Fumiko Ogawa Simoneau, who was last seen alive in their Point Loma home on Jan. 2, 2007.
Her remains were uncovered Jan. 20, 2007 in the Anza-Borrego Desert, but were not identified until 2011. An affidavit for Simoneau’s arrest was sealed by a judge on Sept. 4. Simoneau was arrested that same day in Honolulu, where he had moved after he left Point Loma.
A date for the preliminary hearing was to be set on Oct. 8 in El Cajon Superior Court. The case is in East County because the wife’s body was found in the Anza-Borrego Desert, said Deputy District Attorney Kurt Mechals. The evidence against Simoneau has not been discussed in court.
Simoneau remains in the South Bay Detention Facility.

California Sen. Marty Block (D-39th Dist.) is holding a series of legislative Town Hall meetings between his staff and constituents to field feedback and suggestions on everything from education to water policies and from health care to transportation and other state business.
Among the Town Halls scheduled is one in Point Loma on Monday, Oct. 20 at the San Diego Foundation, located at 2508 Historic Decatur Road, Suite 200, from 6 to 8 p.m.
“Many great bills have started with constituents and local organizations, and it was through discussions like these that we delivered accomplishments for San Diego,” said Block.”Partnering with the local community colleges, the San Diego Chamber of Commerce and a number of groups, we sent SB 850 to the governor’s desk to expand our workforce preparation at community colleges through additional bachelor-degree programs.  “Along with the county of San Diego and local environmental organizations, we passed SB 1395 to improve beach water-quality testing and reporting,” he said.”And with local small business organizations like the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association, we had signed into law SB 1295 to reduce red tape for businesses as they seek to keep their property safe from criminal activity.”

Gov. Jerry Brown has signed AB 1193, The Protected Bikeways Act, giving local governments the liberty to implement modernized bicycling infrastructure. Sponsored by the California Bicycle Coalition and authored by California Assemblymember Phil Ting, The Protected Bikeways Act encourages the implementation of bicycle lanes with physical separation from automobile traffic through the use of medians, curbs, posts and more. 
The San Diego Bicycle Coalition hailed Brown’s decision to make physically separated bikeways viable options for local bicycle infrastructure and the anticipated effect such safety enhancements will have on local riders.  
“The key to getting more people on bicycles is giving them a safe place to ride,” said Bike Coalition executive director Andy Hanshaw. “Governor Brown’s signature is a gift that allows regions to utilize highly regarded bicycle safety standards from around the globe.”
According to the Bike Coalition, a safe and designated area for bicyclists improves conditions for bike safety, car traffic and even pedestrians on sidewalks. The coalition cites that 90 percent of riders surveyed in recent reports feel safer with protected bike lanes.

Point Loma High School students are hoping to win $100,000 or a concert by a Grammy-nominated band in a national contest promoting safe driving by teens.
The young scholars are participating in the “Celebrate My Drive” campaign sponsored by State Farm Insurance. They are spreading the message of “2N2,” which means “two eyes on the road, two hands on the wheel,” a simple, yet effective habit that can reduce distracted driving and help new drivers build confidence on the road.
Students are asking persons ages 14 or older to vote for PLHS at www.celebratemydrive.com. Voters may cast one vote per email address per day from Oct. 15-24.
Learning to drive is a big step in life. State Farm and PLHS students recognize getting a driver’s license is an important and joyous time. Celebrate My Drive observes this milestone with new drivers by encouraging them to make positive choices.
The top U.S. school in the PLHS (large schools) division will win a concert performance by “The Band Perry,” while 10 runner-ups will receive a $100,000 grant. Grants of $25,000 will go to 90 additional schools.
To date, more than 3,000 high schools across America have registered for the contest.

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority celebrated the inaugural flight Oct. 1 between San Diego International Airport and Burbank Bob Hope Airport. With four roundtrip flights operating each weekday, one roundtrip on Saturday and two roundtrips on Sunday, the new nonstop service will provide another convenient option for travelers to access downtown Los Angeles and the Hollywood area without the challenges of auto traffic.
The new San Diego-to-Burbank route complements existing service between San Diego-to-El Centro/Imperial offered by SeaPort. The airline has also proposed new service between San Diego to San Felipe (Baja California, Mexico), which will be timed to allow connections with the San Diego-to-Burbank route. Pending approvals from the U.S. and Mexican governments, the new San Diego-to-San Felipe service is anticipated to begin in November 2014.
