OB business among Filner recall petition pickup sites As the recall movement against Mayor Bob Filner hits full stride, multiple businesses across San Diego have agreed to act as recall-petition pickup sites — including one in Ocean Beach.
Volunteers wanting to obtain petitions to collect signatures may do so at the office of Matt Kalla — State Farm Insurance Agency, 4148 Voltaire St., Ocean Beach, according to Rachel Laing, a spokeswoman for the Recall Bob Filner movement. Filner is under fire because of allegtions of sexual harrassment involving at least 18 female accusers and a so-called “pay-to-play” scenario involving two local developers.
Other businesses serving as recall-petition pickup sites include the Imperial Barber Shop in Encanto, O’Brien’s Pub in Kearny Mesa and the Money Hut in Linda Vista.
Laing said that as of Aug. 20, more than 400 petitions (with 10 signatures apiece) have been returned to the campaign headquarters, and area volunteer directors are reporting thousands more signatures have been collected but not yet turned in to campaign headquarters. To qualify as a ballot measure, recall-petition supports must collect about 102,000 signatures by Sept. 29.
“Because of the decentralized nature of the campaign — with more than 10,000 petitions currently circulating (based on the number of petitions picked up or downloaded from the RecallBobFilner.com site) — we cannot provide an accurate, current count of signatures at any given time,” said Laing.
“Going forward, we’ll provide a tally of signatures received at campaign headquarters each Monday, Wednesday and Friday,” she said.
Laing said the campaign is urging volunteers to return signed petitions to their area director or to campaign headquarters at 7185 Navajo Road, Suite P, San Diego, 92119. PL Assembly to host second annual Art Show The Point Loma Assembly will host its second annual Art Show on Sept. 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. with art from the Point Loma Artists Association (PLAA). The PLAA is a juried arts organization with members from the Peninsula area. Members create art using a variety of media ranging from traditional to experimental, two- and three-dimensional in form.  Watercolors, acrylics, photography, collage, textiles, pottery, sculpture and fused glass are represented. All artwork is original and most are for sale. Ann Walker, a member of both organizations, is chairing the event for the second year. Point Loma Assembly members will provide happy-hour refreshments with tray-passed appetizers. Local entertainment icon Larry Zeiger will entertain with live music. Admission of $20 will help to maintain and improve the 100-year-old Point Loma Assembly building, which is available for rentals to the community. The assembly is located across from Cabrillo Elementary School at 3035 Talbot St. in Point Loma. For information on rentals, call (619) 523-3700. For more information about the art show, call Patti Adams at (619) 887-9313. The public is invited to attend.
The admission cost is $25 per person. Stone Brewing at Liberty Station is the Stone Brewing Co.’s newest outlet with more than 23,500 square feet of indoor and outdoor dining areas and bars, including a bocce ball court, outdoor cinema space and a lush outdoor garden.
