No injuries were reported. 5K walk for Boston bombing victims is June 1 Greg Sterner, owner of Fitness Together-Point Loma is organizing a 5K charity walk at NTC Park at Liberty Station on Saturday, June 1 to benefit the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings in April. Sterner and his wife, Kara, first met in Boston while attending college — one at Northeastern University, the other at Bentley College. The couple said they still have many friends in the greater Boston area and that they hold the city and its residents near and dear to their hearts. The goal of the charity walk is to raise at least $500 for medical costs and other expenses for the bombing victims.  They said all donations will be distributed to One Fund Boston, Inc. The participants will be asked to donate a minimum of $20. The event will be held at 8 a.m. Participants will gather at the Fitness Together-Point Loma studio at Liberty Station, located at 2750 Dewey Road, #101. From there, participants will walk through NTC Park and Liberty Station. Walkers should bring their donations by check, wear comfortable shoes and bring the children and/or their dogs. Coffee and refreshments will be served. To RSVP, email [email protected]. Hostel earns certification for sustainability HI-San Diego, Point Loma received its STEP gold certification for achievements in sustainability.  These accomplishments are above and beyond the bronze and silver certification requirements set by Hostelling International USA’s (HI-USA) pilot sustainability program with Sustainable Travel International (STI), that included 15 hostels.  STEP, an acronym for Sustainable Tourism Education Program, is a gold standard in sustainable tourism management and education, and is among the first global standards to be formally recognized by the United Nations global sustainable tourism criteria. HI-San Diego, Point Loma employed a number of innovative green practices to achieve its gold certification, including: • offering a San Diego specific self-guided eco-tour created by a front desk staff member who writes the curriculum for the San Diego Natural History Museum • using search dogs and high heat for pest control instead of spraying chemicals • ensuring every plant on site is organic, including the vegetable garden “We’re thrilled to receive such a prestigious recognition and contribute to San Diego’s sustainability initiatives as a whole,” said HI-San Diego, Point Loma Hostel manager Jenny Wise of the 55-bed neighborhood hostel.  For more information about HI-USA hostels, visit www.hiusa.org.  For questions about the hostel and its sustainability efforts, or to schedule a tour, contact HI-USA Southwest Regional Vice president Sue Schaffner at [email protected].
