From queens to Magritte, April presents some offbeat opportunities for the adventurous.
10th Avenue Theatre
Through April 21, one of San Diego’s newest small theater companies, Circle Circle dot dot, presents the world premiere of Katherine Harroff’s “Deconstruction of a Drag Queen.” The work is based on the true-life adventures of Anthony Diaz, aka Grace Towers. Mom was hoping her little boy would grow up to be a doctor, but he put on his sister’s clothes and started dancing instead. Lyceum Theatre
April 18 through June 24 at the Lyceum Theatre is a special event musical revue, based on Dorothy Marcic’s book “RESPECT: Women and Popular Music.” This musical survey of women’s journey to full personhood includes “Someone to Watch Over Me,” “These Boots Were Made for Walking,” “I Am Woman” and “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.” Warning: content may offend certain Republican males. Copley Symphony Hall
April 26 and 28, San Diego Symphony explores doomed love with Tchaikovsky’s romantic killer, “Romeo and Juliet Fantasy-Overture.” Guest artist Cho-Liang Lin plays a new violin concerto written for him by Tan Dun (“Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon”). Add Leonard Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from “West Side Story” and it is a totally beguiling evening at Copley Symphony Hall, 750 B Street. Tickets range from $20-$96. April 24 – 29, San Diego Opera presents Gioachino Rossini’s comic opera, “The Barber of Seville” at the Civic Theatre.
