The San Diego Sportfishing Council will again host families and guests to celebrate the start of a new fishing season at the 28th Annual Port of San Diego’s Day at the Docks on Sunday, April 22.
The event will take place at the Sportfishing Landings in Point Loma from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to Katherine Miller, event producer for the San Diego Sportfishing Council.
Day at the Docks reels in the start of the spring fishing season with a day full of events, including activities for children and boat rides around the bay, Miller said. The event provides an opportunity for newcomers to the sport to learn about sportfishing.
Those who attend will also be able to buy tackle from manufacturers at the event, Miller said.
Day at the Docks is free and open to the public. Parking is available and a double-decker shuttle bus will be on hand to transport participants to the docks, Miller said.
“It’s a big event. I think all of Point Loma feels the impact,” Miller said.
The event generates significant business associated with the sportfishing industry, she said.
The event starts with the welcoming of the Sea Adventure 80, which departs Saturday, April 21, at 9 p.m. and returns to the port between 7 and 8 a.m. the next morning, Miller said.
Sea Adventure 80 should return April 22 with the first catch of the season, she said. Last year, the haul included albacore and blue fin tuna, she said.
Day at the Docks will feature free seminars on preparing a fresh catch, she said. Sportfishing enthusiasts can also participate in casting contests, knot-tying competitions and enjoy marine-themed artwork, Miller said.
The event will also feature several musical ensembles, including The Thursday Night Fishing Club with Gary Schiebler, the Bayou Brothers and plenty of other entertainment, according to Miller.
There are still spaces available on the Sea Adventure 80 for those who wish to be part of the seasonal event, Miller said. Tickets for the Sea Adventure 80 are $180.
The San Diego Sportfishing Council is comprised of several San Diego businesses, and includes members from Fisherman’s Landing, Sportfishing H&M Landing, Point Loma Sportfishing, Lee Palm’s Sportfishers and Point Loma Seafoods.
