The Bishop’s School girls water polo team is in a familiar role, heading back to the post-season. La Jolla Country Day School’s Lady Torreys were not so fortunate.
LJCD ended its season last week in placing second in San Diego’s City Central Conference, missing the CIFs by one victory.
“Since the Jewish Community Center pool where they normally practice and play had closed, these teammates were loyally driving all over San Diego County to use pools to practice and play “” El Cajon, Lakeside, Ramona and further,” LJCD head coach Steve Traverso said. “They each made an extraordinary effort to keep the team together. Although we’ll miss the dedicated work of Penny Flicker ’08, next season the Lady Torreys are going to be in the hunt for a CIF slot as they return with six starters from this season.”
Bishop’s (22-7, 6-2), meantime, won a pair of league matches last week with wins over Cathedral Catholic (16-6) and University City High (15-6).
In the win over Cathedral, Dominique Sardo scored a game-high five goals to go along with six steals.
Senior Zinnea Alexander and sophomore Sarah Presant each had three goals, while co-captain Cathy White chipped in with two goals, two assists and two steals. Goalie Julia Eichenfield had nine saves in goal.
In its victory over UC, Bishop’s was again led by Sardo with five goals, while Alexander added three, sophomore Katy Feaver notched four and senior Jessica Noel added a pair. Eichenfield recorded 10 saves.
University City High finished the regular season at 15-13, 4-4 in league action.
Along with a loss to Bishop’s last week, UC topped La Jolla 6-4.
“The girls have really impressed me this year with their ability to handle adversity and continue to improve as the season has gone on,” UC head coach Ty Lackey commented. “More so than any other year, I really get a sense of togetherness when they are around each other, which I believe will help us accomplish our goals as we begin the CIF playoffs.”
