Local scholastic girls water polo teams have their eyes set on CIF play as regular season action wound down.
The Bishop’s School finished as co-league champs in the Western League with a 9-1 record. Bishop’s knocked off rival La Jolla 16-6 in action last week, with Dominique Sardo (six goals) and Sarah Van Norman (five goals) leading the way. Chelsea Smith-Carmichael added four goals and four assists, while Cathy White added a nice scoring play.
In a 17-3 win earlier in the week over Scripps Ranch, Van Norman led the way with six goals.
“We are hoping to get in the playoffs and start peaking as we get to the finals to try to defend it and send our seniors out on top,” Bishop’s head coach Doug Peabody said. “Christina Michel is having a solid senior season in goal, and without the tremendous defensive and all-around contributions from Winnie Eastwood and Andrea Flores, we would not be having such a successful season.”
University City (UC) High was ending play last week with a mark of 11-16 (5-6 league) with one game left.
UC had a tough week, dropping an 11-2 decision to La Jolla. UC’s goalie and starting center defender were both injured and did not play.
The Lady Centurions rebounded with a 14-3 win over Patrick Henry. Backup goalie Amber Van Orman had 22 saves in the two games.
“As far as the season goes, we are right on track to make it to the semifinals (CIF) which has been our goal from the start,” UC head coach Ty Lackey said.
At La Jolla Country Day School, the Lady Torreys wrapped up regular-season play last week with a tough loss to league champion Point Loma.
The Lady Torreys took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by sophomore Claire Altree, but could only manage two more goals the rest of the game, eventually losing 14-3. Junior Melanie Kaplan scored the other LJCD goals.
“The Country Day girls finished a great season to build on, as we return our entire varsity lineup next season,” LJCD head coach Nate Heppner noted.
” Editor’s note: La Jolla High did not respond to a request for information.
