Several scholastic girls water polo teams continue to surface with victories in recent play.
The Bishop’s School captured last weekend’s Tyr Cup competition in Anaheim.
Bishop’s (12-6) opened play with a 17-2 win over Woodbridge High. Dominique Sardo and Katy Feaver each tallied four goals, with Zinnea Alexander, Sammi Peck, Alexis Bohlmeijer and Melanie Boehrig each adding a pair.
Bishop’s followed that game with a 14-8 win over Esperanza. Sardo (six) and Alexander (five) combined for 11 goals, with Sarah Presant adding a pair. Julia Eichenfield had 10 saves, while Stephanie Tecca chipped in with three steals and three assists.
On Saturday, the Lady Knights scored a 10-9 overtime win over Long Beach Millikan in the semifinals, with Alexander notching four goals. Sardo added two goals, while Tecca, Cathy White, Peck and Presant each chipped in with a goal.
Bishop’s finished tourney play with a 10-4 win over Temple City in the title game, as Sardo led the way with five goals.
Alexander was named tourney MVP, while Eichenfield, Sardo, Tecca and White were named to the All-Tournament Team.
In other action last week, Bishop’s lost to Coronado (9-4), while scoring wins over Vista (10-9) and University City (13-5).
In the win over UC, Eichenfield recorded a career-high 17 saves.
La Jolla High entered play this week with a 6-5 record following a loss to University City High.
In a recent 4-3 win over Cathedral, La Jolla got goals from Jackie Walters, Mary Olson, Bridgette Souza and Chelsea Drinco.
“We are definitely a rebuilding team, but our girls are working very hard to get to the top again,” La Jolla High head coach Dante Laghetto said.
At University City High, head coach Ty Lackey and the Lady Centurions enter play this week with a 10-9 record (3-2 league).
In action last week, UC topped La Jolla 7-3 and fell to Bishop’s 13-5.
In the win over La Jolla, senior captain Paige Squiller scored five goals, recorded four steals and earned three drawn ejections, while senior co-captain and goalie Allison Smith recorded seven saves and made two assists.
Squiller tallied four goals in the loss to Bishop’s, with Smith notching nine saves.
University City finished seventh out of 34 teams in the recent tournament in Murrieta. Squiller scored 22 goals in the tourney and earned a place on the All-Tournament Team.
“Right now we are right where we want to be, and the important thing is the girls realize that we need to continue to improve in order to accomplish our goals,” Lackey said.
