Pointers water polo goes unbeaten in league play

The boys water polo team at Point Loma High School has grabbed the No. 1 seed in Div. III CIF playoffs.
The team floated to the top of City Central League standings with a perfect 10-0 record and a remarkable 22-4 overall mark. The top seed earns the Pointers a first-round bye in the tournament that began Nov. 10.
The Pointer polo boys, under head coach Ken Toma, will be awaiting the winner of the Nov. 17 match between No. 8 Olympian (10-10 overall) and No. 9 Mission Bay (8-14).
The water Dogs will begin CIF play in a quarterfinal match at 4 p.m. this afternoon. All CIF matches are played at La Jolla High’s Coggan Pool complex. The winner advances to the semifinals next Monday, Nov. 16, to be played at 5:45 and 7:30 p.m. at the same location.
The finals are scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 21, at 12:15 p.m., and the Pointers have plans to reach and win their division final.
The team’s performance this season is the result of continuing improvement in the last three years. The Pointers have been in the lowest CIF group (Div. III) based on their previous records, which included 2013 (7-23 overall, 0-8 in league) and 2014 (15-15, 5-3) before this breakout season.
Team captain Brendan McMahon, a junior, leads the team. Top scorers include junior Adam Watson (83 goals + 44 assists = 127 points), followed closely by freshman Kai Ball (56 + 71 = 127) and McMahon (77 + 33 = 110).
The team is averaging 13.8 goals per game and yielding just 7.8 goals.
Junior goaltender Zac James-Fortune has made 228 saves.
