Point Loma High’s renowned sailing team keeps – well – sailing along as the 2015-16 season gets under way.
Not only did the Pointers take first place in the Gold Division of the In-District Regatta event, sailed Sept. 19 in Newport Beach, but their newer members received invaluable experience as a total of five CFJ-class boats bore the Pointer logo.
These events are held under the auspices of the Pacific Division of the International Scholastic Sailing Association and are the official kick-off event to the new season.
Besides their No. 1 boat bringing home a first place finish with 31 points (the finish order of all seven races totaled), the winners had finishes of 2-3-2-8-10-1-5.
Also, the No. 5 boat finished sixth (71 points); the No. 2 boat finished 25th (156 points); the No. 3 boat finished 31st (204 points), and the No. 4 boat finished 32nd (205 points) in a 33-boat field.
Next up on the Pacific Coast’s association calendar is the Norcal in-league regatta at the Encinal Yacht Club, near Alameda, on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3 and 4, to be sailed in CFJ-class boats.
Last weekend, the Pointers traveled to the U.S. Sailing Center in Long Beach for the District Championship Regatta, sailing in C420/Laser boats in 17 races.
Here, in a 16-boat field, the Pointers’ No. 2 boat took first place honors with an incredible point total of 23. Their nearest competitor was Pointer boat No. 3, which finished second, with 59 points. The only other Pointer entry, boat No. 1, finished fifth, with 116 points.
In the Radial Singlehanded Championships, also last weekend in Long Beach, the highest finisher was senior Jack McGraw, in 13th place. Also finishing were freshman Taisei Hatter (16th); freshman James Ozaki (22nd); freshman Sean Caulfield (29th), and sophomore James Schrady (30th).
