Point Loma High’s Academic League team completed its regular season undefeated, winning the championship of the city’s Central Division and earning entry to the “Final Four” of citywide academia.
The San Diego City Championships were held on April 7 at the San Diego County Office of Education’s Instructional Television Studio. There they watched La Jolla High defeat Madison in a 4 p.m. match.
The Pointers took the stage at 5 p.m., defeating Patrick Henry to move to the finals.
The finals, held immediately after at 6 p.m., saw the Vikings hand the Pointers their first defeat of the season, leaving them as city runners-up in the 2016 Academic League competition.
This marks the first time the team has qualified for the final round. The competition was filmed for future broadcast on the San Diego Education cable channel.
The team’s captain is Adrian Burnes. President is Kyle Nichols, and the faculty advisor is James Ballantine. –Scott Hopkins
