Point Loma volleyball goes 3-0 on Hawaii trip

The No. 9 regionally ranked Point Loma volleyball team completed its three-game Hawaii road trip with a 24-26, 25-10, 25-19 and 25-19 victory over Chaminade on Saturday, Nov. 14.
The Sea Lions (19-9, 13-6 PacWest) moved into a tie for second place in the PacWest standings with California Baptist, who was ranked one spot ahead of PLNU in the most recent NCAA Regional poll. Chaminade (17-9) dropped back into a tie with Concordia (CA) for sixth place in the conference standings with a 10-8 record.
Point Loma looked like it might be in trouble after Chaminade closed out the first set on a 4-0 run to win 26-24 in extra points. But the Sea Lions were not deterred. They hit .375 in the second set and held Chaminade to a -.111 hitting percentage. They would go on to outhit CUH in the next two sets, including hitting .448 in the fourth set to earn the victory.
Heather Leavitt had 17 kills, while Bethany Mandon and Cayleen Harty chipped in with eight and 10, respectively. Mandon also had seven blocks as PLNU won the battle at the net 10-3. Bree Vieth racked up four of the Sea Lions’ six aces and Savannah Wedemeyer posted a double-double with 38 assists and 18 digs.
Keani Passi led Chaminade with 28 kills and 10 digs.
Point Loma will return home to face Concordia (CA) in its final match of the 2015 regular season on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 1:30 p.m.
In PacWest news, Dixie State wrapped up the 2015 conference title this evening with a 3-1 win over Hawaii Hilo. The Red Storm (18-9, 15-4 PacWest) are up two games in the standings with one game remaining.
