Point Loma sweeps Northwest Nazarene

The Point Loma volleyball team posted a season-best .390 hitting percentage en route to a 25-13, 25-20 and 25-18 sweep of defending GNAC-champion, Northwest Nazarene, on Saturday, Sept. 12.

The Sea Lions (5-3) made only nine hitting errors in the entire match, including just three through the first two sets. PLNU even posted 20 kills while winning the first set.

Heather Leavitt had a match-high 16 kills with only one error for a .517 hitting percentage. Bethany Mandon added nine kills and just one error. Savannah Wedemeyer posted five kills of her own to go along with 37 assists and two service aces.

PLNU’s defense also had its best performance of the tournament, holding NNU to a .144 hitting percentage and outblocking them 7-4.

“We were able to work out a lot of the things that plagued us the first few matches,” said Point Loma head coach Scott. “The seniors held a meeting with the team in between matches today and they really seemed to help get up back on track. We came in hyper focused for this last match.”

That focus showed early with the 25-13 victory in the first set and PLNU making just the one error.

“That was a very quality win that could have implications later in the year,” Scott added. “We came into the season knowing we had to go 5-3 and we were fortunate to get this last one to put us there (5-3).”

Point Loma will open conference play next Saturday, Sept. 19 when it hosts Dixie State at 1:30 p.m.

“We are excited for this week because we get to work on ourselves and get better,” Scott said. “We have things we need to work on and we look forward to what we can be.”
