In what’s become a family affair, Point Loma siblings Erica and Kevin Soares have teamed up for the first time in San Diego City College’s production of the hit musical “Grease.”
The show, which features a cast of 32 members, will head into its final stretch of performances this weekend at the college’s Saville Theatre. And according to 22-year-old Erica, who plays the role of Rizzo, it’s enjoyed a successful run.
“We’ve pretty much been selling out the house every night, which is cool,” she said. As for working alongside her brother, Erica said, “My brother had never done theater before and he’s really shining. I’m very proud of him.”
She also noted a few of the benefits that it affords them both.
“We give each other feedback and it’s always easy to get together for rehearsals because we live, literally, two blocks away from each other.”
As a vocalist, Erica said she’s been a member of a choir as far back as she can remember. However, it wasn’t until high school that she made her acting debut. Additionally, Erica and her a cappella group recently had two songs featured in an episode of the CW Television Network program, Veronica Mars.
Kevin, 19, plays Danny in the production and joked that his acting experience was considerably less than his sister’s.
“It’s pretty simple, I have none,” he chuckled. “This [production] is my first. Usually, I’m just in the audience watching her, so this time it’s neat.”
Also a pitcher for Point Loma Nazarene University’s baseball team, Kevin said there’s little comparison between his two extracurricular activities.
“I thought baseball was hard, but this is a lot harder.”
Although Erica said she’d like theater to always remain a part of her life, she plans to attend dental hygiene school, while Kevin said he’s going back to the baseball field.
Tickets for the show are $15 for general admission and $10 for students, military and seniors. Final show times are Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10 and 11, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m. For more information, call (619) 388-3676.
