The online retail company for boating, sailing and outdoor aficionados, Point Loma Outfitting is opening a store at 2885 Perry Road in Point Loma’s Liberty Station. The grand opening will take place Thursday, July 17.
Specializing in sailing and outdoor performance wear, the store will feature what owners said are the best brands available to the water and outdoors activity industry, including Gill, Camet, Puma, and Kaenon sunglasses.
It is the largest retailer of SLAM sailing gear, a line based in Italy that produces high-tech gear and resort lifestyle apparel, Point Loma Outfitting also carries the largest selection of Patagonia clothing in San Diego County, according to store owners.
Proprietors Tom and Katie Carruthers are longtime and avid water enthusiasts. Tom, a sailor with roots in the Great Lakes of Michigan, sailed and raced in Canada’s and America’s Cups and Mackinacs 16 times. Katie, a swimmer, began her passion in the pools of Southern California and raced across the U.S. and competed at UCLA, where her records still stand. They have made San Diego’s coasts and bays their hub for water activities. Prior to selling online and opening the store they ran a sailing school at Shelter Island.
As they prepare to celebrate their grand opening, the Carrutherses also wanted to contribute to the community and environment. In doing so, Point Loma Outfitting will donate 10 percent of its sales to Liberty Station neighbor San Diego Coastkeeper, a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting San Diego’s waterways.
The new business will share proceeds from store sales between today, July 17 and Sunday, July 20.
Point Loma Outfitting and San Diego Coastkeeper are members of One Percent for the Planet, a mounting worldwide movement of businesses that donate 1 percent of their sales to a network of environmental organizations.
