The Point Loma Library is living proof that if you build it “” or rebuild it “” they certainly will come.
Located within a flourishing community, the library staff decided three years ago that it was time to enlarge, encourage and, ultimately, reconnect with that community. Consequently, the old branch was torn down and replaced by a state-of-the-art, new facility, which was voted the Best Branch Library in June by San Diego Magazine.
Wednesday, Sept. 20 marks the library’s third anniversary and to celebrate the branch has planned various animal-themed activities that coincide with the summer reading program for children.
The Wonderful World of Wildlife begins at 5 p.m. with a presentation by Project Wildlife representatives Bill and Gail Beardsley “” and a live raptor for kids and parents alike to examine up close.
At 6:30 p.m., former San Diego zookeeper Bill Seaton, author of My Seven Years in Captivity: Tales and Misadventures in the San Diego Zoo, will speak about the zoo’s history, tell funny stories and sign books to follow.
Seaton has presented at the library before and according to Hill, he always “had his audiences in stitches.”
Beverages and cake will be served after the two talks, complements of library staff and Friends of the Library. Local artist Barbara Ambler’s work will be on display in the common room all evening to add to the theme. While Ambler is an illustrator, she specializes in painting wild animals.
Due in large part to the redesign, a variety of programs have been added to the branch year-round, bringing in people from all stretches of San Diego. The Peninsula Singers Choir, comprised of 50-60 community members, is just one of many groups that use the branch to facilitate its programs and meetings.
“We have seen a complete increase in use of the facility because we have also become a community [and] culture center,” said Head Librarian Christine Gonzales. “People say it takes a village; well, it takes a community and that’s how it happened here.”
