For several years, Loma Portal neighbors have been fighting over the proposed new football stadium at Point Loma High School. The yard signs “Save Our Neighborhood” or “Support Our Neighborhood” signify which side of the battle you support. Mayor Kevin Faulconer has turned a blind eye by not weighing in on this issue. I believe the mayor has the power and ability to effect this decision. Agreements between the school district and the City happen all the time. The mayor has several ways to influence the school district to craft a legally binding field use agreement, which would allow for the improvements while limiting field use to school and student activities – but that takes leadership. The mayor’s failure to take a stand and broker a legally binding agreement will ensure this issue heads to court for years to come. Instead of reasonable neighbors deciding the outcome, lawyers and judges will make the decision. Legal tactics and appeals will not only delay the stadium and rob this generation of a field they can play on, it will also divert tax money for legal fees away from the classroom. The school district has deep pockets filled with taxpayer money. While the district will likely prevail, the price will be heavy. Neighbors will continue to be pitted against each other, teachers will find fewer dollars for school programs, and even the upcoming freshman class will probably not be able to enjoy playing in a new stadium. Life is about compromise and progress. Neighbors should have a say in things that can have a big impact on their quality of life. A legally binding field use agreement is that compromise. The agreement supports those who want to see an improved facility, while mitigating adverse impacts on the surrounding neighbors.
