Despite a one-sided final regular season loss, Point Loma’s Pointers still finished as the No. 4 seed in CIF Div. II football playoffs that begin this Friday (Nov. 2).
That means the Dogs will receive a coveted first-round bye in the playoffs. They were seeded behind No. 1 Granite Hills, No. 2 Poway and No. 3 Valley Center. The four teams now have a week to scout opponents and allow injuries to heal.
Cathedral Catholic, which finished as the No. 2 seed in the Open (highest) division, inflicted a 59-7 loss on the host Pointers last Friday night at Pete Ross Stadium. But the strength of the Dons helped the Pointers cling to the fourth seed spot in computer rankings from MaxPreps that are used by CIF.
The Pointers’ first playoff game will now be played in the quarterfinals on Nov. 9. Their opponent will be the winner of the first-round game between No. 5 seed Lincoln (a Western League opponent the Pointers defeated 33-20 in week nine) and No. 12 seed Westview. The team with the highest seed will host the game meaning the Pointers are guaranteed that game will be played in front of local fans.
The CIF bracket shows the winner of the Pointers first game will play the survivor of a bracket that includes No. 1 Granite Hills, No. 8 Ramona (who the Pointers defeated 41-27 in week two) and No. 9 Olympian (who the Pointers defeated 45-13 in week five. If Granite Hills loses, the Pointers would host a semifinal game.
If the Pointers win the quarterfinal game they will next play on Nov. 16 in the division semifinals, also at the home of the higher seed. The Div. II finals are scheduled for Southwestern College in Chula Vista on Nov. 23 kicking off at 7 p.m..
