A quartet of Pointer football players from the team that played for a CIF championship was honored by coaches for their efforts on and off the field with two perpetual trophies presented at the team banquet at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse on Harbor Island.
The Bennie Edens Award is given annually to a player or players who display the skills, attitude, and effort along with the character traits valued by the former coach who passed away in 2008 after leading the Pointers to five CIF titles and a then-record 241 victories and numerous awards in a career that spanned from 1948 to 1998.
Recipients were seniors Cameron Lucas and Noah Turbeville. Lucas averaged 4.5 yards per carry on offense and played strong defense. Lucas, also a track and field team member, was just named 2022 Fall Student Athlete of the Year for the City Conference by Mission Federal Credit Union and CIF.
Turbeville led the Pointers with 1,127 yards rushing, a 10.0 average per carry, and scored 10 touchdowns despite missing two games with injuries. In the team’s 49-14 CIF semifinal romp over Del Norte, Turbeville had his greatest game, running 401 yards on just 17 carries.
The Sgt. Jimmie Howard Semper Fi Award is named for a Congressional Medal of Honor winner who served as a Pointer assistant football coach following his retirement from the U.S. Marines. Recipients are those players who Sgt. Howard would have been proud to take to battle. Named were junior Nate Terzoli and senior Chase Lowary. Terzoli is a first-team all-league defensive end who made 61 tackles and 20.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, and returned an interception for a touchdown.
Lowary was the team leader on defense and named Defensive Player of the Year as well as first-team all-CIF as a linebacker with 102 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and two interceptions. He signed a scholarship offer last week from Valparaiso University in Indiana where he plans to major in kinesiology. The Beacons are members of the D-1 Championship Subdivision Pioneer League.
