A sailor pleaded guilty Monday to felony assault of an employee of San Diego Gas & Electric Co. in a Sept. 7 incident in Mission Beach in which the assailant used the cast from his broken arm to strike the worker.
The worker was rushed to a hospital for emergency surgery.
Christ George Kolaras, 29, who is stationed at Naval Base Point Loma, also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest.
Deputy District Attorney Lisa Rodriguez said Kolaras faces up to a year or less in county jail.
Kolaras was allegedly under the influence of methamphetamine when he attacked workers doing repairs at an electrical box at 3102 Mission
Boulevard around 1:30 a.m. on Sept. 7. Kolaras had a broken arm and used the cast to injure Vic Justis, who had to be taken to the hospital for emergency heart surgery after Justis was struck in the chest.
The workers had warned Kolaras about something related to exposed wiring, and prosecutors say he then attacked them for no apparent reason. It took four San Diego Police officers to subdue Kolaras.
Sentencing is set for Feb. 8.
San Diego Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sontag dismissed two assault and battery charges involving two other workers and for making a criminal threat. She also dismissed a misdemeanor charge that Kolaras was under the influence o methamphetamine.
Kolaras’ attorney was contacted but unavailable for comment. Kolaras remains free on $100,000 bond. His bond condition prohibits him from having any contact with SD&E employees.
